Hello! I'm Katharine.

 

I've been practising yoga for over 10 years and I believe that yoga really is for everybody and every body. Based in sunny Dorset I offer Chair Yoga classes for all.

​

I discovered Chair Yoga (or Chyoga as I like to call it) when I was searching for a gentle yoga class for my parents. I'm sure they won't mind me telling you they're in their seventies and can't get down to the floor, or up again! Even the gentlest beginners yoga class on a mat wasn't right for them. 

​

Under the guidance of Liz Oppedijk, a leading expert on Chair Yoga in the UK, I completed my Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga (LVCY) training in 2021. More info on LVCY below.

LVCY was established in the USA in 1999, when a student in Lakshmi's yoga class developed arthritis and was unable to get down to the floor. She found that she was able to adapt every yoga position from the mat to a chair. Her mission is:

 

"To bring yoga's integration of body/mind and spirit to those unable to practice traditional mat yoga."

During my practical Chair Yoga exam, I had an achilles injury from playing football and had to complete my exam on crutches. Thank goodness I was sitting down! I was unable to return to football for 4 months. Being an active person, this was very frustrating. Doing Chyoga kept me active and the breathing techniques helped to balance my stressed out mind. It also encouraged me to listen to my body and treat it with kindness, which is the whole philosophy of LVCY.

I've since been teaching Chyoga to many different people of all ages. Some have had challenges with various parts of their bodies, such as arthritis, a bad back or spine, and limited movement in their legs. While others with full movement in their bodies have simply benefited from the deep sense of calm and relaxation that a Chyoga class provides, especially in anxious and stressful times.
